Onggi Handbuilding w/ Chris Ma


Join internationally renowned ceramicist Chris Mar for this exclusive workshop, as he introduces the traditional Asian coiling technique of Onggi.

This 2 day intense allows students to design and create a large hand built pot using our turntable and electric wheels, exploring texture and creative form.

Who is Chris Ma?

Chris MA studied Art & Design and Studio Ceramics in Hong Kong and then graduated from Wolverhampton University, UK in 1991. In 1994, he joined the International Workshop of Ceramic Art in Tokoname Japan for Anagama kiln firing. His works were selected to show in the North Queensland Ceramic Awards Biennial; Clunes Ceramic Awards Biennial and the Sydney Teapot show.

Globally to show in the International Biennial of Artistic Ceramics in Aveiro, Portugal 2023, International Contemporary Ceramics Biennial in China, Taiwan and Art exhibition in Hong Kong and Japan. 

Times & Dates:

  • SUN 5th May (10:00am ~ 3:00pm)

  • SUN 19th May (10:00am ~12:00pm)

Masterclass Outline:

  • Day 1 - Chris will demonstrate the onggi Techniques. students can sketch and design the shape of your piece and discuss the structural approach with the teacher before Building their pot . (30 minute lunch break)
  • Day 2 - Will be devoted to glazing with full use of our studio’s exclusive glazes. 

Please note that the second class will be held 2 weeks after our initial building weekend.

What to bring: 

  • A pencil or a small notebook
  • Lunch (our studio provides a kitchen with a fridge, sandwich press and microwave.)

 Experience level: Beginner/Intermediate

Anyone aged 13 & over is welcome to join, but anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult who is also taking the class.
