Advanced Wheel Throwing Workshop
Take your wheel-throwing skills to the next level in this exclusive two-day intensive with the incredibly talented ceramicist Evan Davis. Designed for experienced potters, this workshop will challenge you to push past your limits, working with larger clay weights and exploring dynamic new forms.
Through hands-on demonstrations and personalized guidance, Evan will help you refine your technique, throw thinner, and use clay more sustainably. Learn to maximize clay efficiency, reduce waste, and achieve refined, lightweight pieces without compromising strength.
This is not a beginner’s class—it’s an opportunity to expand your technical repertoire and take your ceramics to new heights. Don’t miss this chance to learn from a true master of the craft!
DATE & TIME:
- SAT 5th April / 9am – 2pm (30 minutes break)
- SUN 6th April / 9am – 2pm (30 minutes break)
Experience Level: Intermediate - Advanced (basic understanding of wheel throwing is recommended)
Who is Evan Davis? With over 30 years of experience in ceramics, Evan Davis is a highly skilled ceramicist, educator, and studio artist. He has extensive professional studio production experience, specializing in large-scale wheel-thrown forms and high-volume ceramic production. His deep understanding of glaze formulation and application allows him to create unique and high-quality surface finishes. As an educator, Evan has taught students of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners, providing comprehensive instruction in the foundations of ceramics while fostering creativity and technical excellence.
WEEKEND GOAL:
Day 1: Make
- Introduction to studio & equipment
- Advanced Throwing techniques
- Creating a two piece form.
- Making a large bowl or platter.
- Throwing thinner and using clay more sustainably.
Day 2: Trimming & Refine
- Advanced trimming techniques
- Refining your form for a polished look.
WHAT'S INCLUDED:
- Time: 5 hours per day
- Materials Included: White stoneware clay (You may also bring your specific type of stoneware clay to throw with)
- What You’ll Create: A large vase and bowl. (Your favourite piece will be fired by the studio)
- Tools & equipment (You may also bring your own throwing tools)
- Complimentary Sunday Glazing Class: As part of this workshop, you'll also receive a 2-hour glazing session. This session will run 3 weeks later once the pieces have been fired.
WHAT TO BRING:
- A pencil and a small notebook with unruled pages to assist you and me with the visual planning of your intended shapes.
- Lunch (we have a kitchen with a fridge and microwave)
Age Requirement: 13 & over (Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult who is also enrolled in the class.)
Please note: Attendance on both days is essential as make-up sessions are not available.
